"Among those whom I like or admire, I can find no common denominator, but among those whom I love, I can: All of them make me laugh."
W.H. Auden 1907-1977,
The number six thing I am thankful for is a sense of humor. I generally try to find the funny in most situations and it's not always easy, but I'd rather laugh then cry.
Today was a hard day to find the funny. We made the mistake of putting Carolina to bed early (actually more like on time) on Saturday. We have loose weekend bedtimes, before midnight usually suffices, but she seemed tired Saturday night so we got her in bed before 10. Big mistake, with the time change the early riser was up at 6am on my side of the bed. I was not happy, but Isaac had gotten up Saturday morning, when I might add she slept until the unheard of 8:30, so it was my turn. I sulked on the couch while Disney shows played and became even more unhappy. Finally about 7:30 I decided to go for a run, as Isaac was up making breakfast. My run was a disaster, with rain and a general feeling of crabbiness cutting it short I returned home in tears wailing that "I suck".
Pumpkin pancakes and a cup of coffee did help, as did a successful pot of homemade chicken tortellini soup, but as we prepared to leave for a long put off trip to Killeen to visit the Mayborn Planetarium I began to feel anxious.
"I have a bad feeling" I told Isaac before we left. "I feel like something going to go wrong, the times online are wrong, it's closed or they won't accept my Groupon. It'll go wrong and you'll get mad at me."
Isaac, used to my "bad feelings" assured me that everything would be fine and we set off about 2:00 for a 4pm showing of Nanocam. It wasn't the easiest start, traffic through Round Rock was at a standstill and we had to stop for gas but finally we were really on our way. We got into Killeen and to the Planetarium just fine, I hopped out to get tickets while Isaac parked sensing doom. I walked in to the ticket desk braced for the worst. "You have a 4 o'clock showing today?" I asked, the two guys nodded. "I have a Groupon?" They nodded and very quickly I had my tickets and was told 15 minutes. The three of us wandered the small area that was mostly empty save for a giant space rock and magnet (to use on the magnetic rock) and a $2 wind machine. We sat down outside theater just before 4 and then one of the guys looked nervously over at us and came over.
"Hi, so it looks like one of our cameras has broken...we can't do any of the ceiling projections." Isaac and I looked at each other for a minute and then burst out laughing. What else could we do? We'd driven over an hour, in rain showers, dragging a tired, cranky 8 year old only to have the theater be broken. "You called it" Isaac laughed. The employees were very apologetic, they gave me back my Groupon to use again and apologized over and over. While Isaac and I had chosen to laugh, the cranky 8 year old in question started to cry, she'd been dragged from her dolls stuck in the car for over an hour, then waited for another 20 to be told nothing was going to happen. So we did what any self respecting adults to do; pacified her with ice cream at Sonic. As we sat outside eating our ice cream, commenting on the emptiness of killeen we relaxed and joked about our hour trip for ice cream! Then we got in the car, and drove home.
"What was everyone's favorite part of Killeen?" I asked as we settled into our seats.
" The space rock" Isaac replied, "because it's not from Killeen"
We all laughed and when we got back to town and passed the Sonic 5 minutes from our house Carolina pointed to it and joked
"That Sonic isn't good enough for us, we drive all the way to Killeen for our ice cream!" and we laughed, because sometimes that's all you can do.
I'm thankful that I can find the funny and that I surround myself with people who can as well. Life is so serious, so trying. We will go crazy if we don't find times, no matter how small to just laugh!
