This is the story of Lamby and Carolina, a true love story. Lamby's story begins back in, I think 2002. I was working at Garden Ridge and he was part of the Easter merchandise. At this point I can not tell you why I decided he was worth the $10 I paid for him. Maybe I hadn't used my employee discount in a while, maybe I was lonely, maybe I had fallen under the spell of his super soft ears, which is how Carolina thinks it happened. But, for whatever reason I bought him took him home, put him on my bed, and within six months moved out and stuck him in my closet at my mom's house. Carolina refers to this as Lamby's sad days.
Poor Lamby did not see the outside world until September of 2010 when we were all out at my mom's house for her birthday. I don't remember exactly what I was looking for in my closet but I happened upon Lamby way in the back, laughed and handed him to Carolina "here, play with that." Her eyes widened as she pulled his large pink body of fluff towards her.
"Is he yours?" "Was he yours when you were a kid?" "Can I have him?" Still on the hunt for whatever I had been looking for I distractedly told her the story of where I bought him and that she could have him if her dad said it was okay.
Isaac agreed, albeit grudgingly, as Lamby is fairly large but he okayed the acquisition and Lamby became part of the family. Carolina brought him home and he didn't leave her side the rest of the evening, she fell asleep with her arms around him
This continued until Monday morning when, as she left for school, and wouldn't be back for 2 weeks, she cried as she left Lamby, begging me to love him and stroke his ears while she was gone. "His ears are so soft" she sniffed as she kissed his nose promising to see him soon.
I figured that by the time two weeks rolled around Lamby would be forgotten as toys often are, but no it was once again a Lamby weekend and it has been since then. Carolina uses Lamby as a pillow when she is here, he comes downstairs with her every morning and has made the trip to Marble Falls as well as back to my mom at Christmas for the day.
Lamby is not without his problems. Being forced to have conversations with a stuffed lamb is frankly annoying after a while. Worse when "Lamby" interrogates me about his years left alone in the closet. Also having stuffed lamb ears shoved in yours face with a request to "see how soft his ears are" can get old. However, Carolina loves that lamb, it is not unusual for her to fall asleep on the couch with her arms around Lamby.
Do we think this is weird? Yes, sometimes, but it's also pretty cute!
Lucky for Lamby he was saved from a life in the closet, and after many years of neglect found a new friend who loves him very much!
8/5/12 update: Over a year later Lamby is still a much beloved member of our family. Despite the fact that his fur is less bright he is still very much loved by a certain 9 year old. Even Isaac and I find ourselves calling out "Hi Lamby" as we walk past him on days Carolina is not here.
Lamby would like to say today:
